installing exhaust flange gaskets

Dear All,

When installing the exhaust flange gaskets on my 1983 380SEC, the gaskets have two different sides: one is covered with a thin metal plate.
Does this side (the one with the metal plate) have to face the cylinder head or the exhaust flange?
