All this agonizing over which oil to use is pretty hilarious. All these opinions on favorite brands, dino versus synthetic . On an on. Statements about feeling good because you the oil is relatively clear after many miles of driving.
Let's think about that one.

Modern oils are designed to hold in suspension particulates small enough to get past the oil filer. So why is clear necessarily good? Maybe it's just the opposite. People have favorite brands. Ok, but they imply that just because their engine is clean with their favorite that this product is vastly superior to other brands. Have they tried all the other brands? Most probably not.

I can't think of 1 post over the last 4 years and 2 MB forums, that was addressing an oil related failure! I think that a MB engine running along at U.S. speed limits will last a very, very long time as long as you follow the factory approved fluids list and change the oil and filter per the factory interval.

Seems to me that few, if any of us, have any real data. Even if you have your oil analyzed, you are a data point of 1.

Just my opinion,
Steve dino, 300E 233K no oil related problems that I know of.

oil viscosity on 300ce

Thanks to all who responded with such thoughtful insight...I too have been an avid fan of Valvoline and its the only oil (20W50) that my Alfa Spider Veloce eats...then again it is only driven 1500 miles per year and only on sunny days sleeping during the winter under a blanket in a heated garage. I intend on sleeping on this and making a decision for the 300CE that I bought after 10 years of not having a Benz and wanting to replace it with a coupe...it was my wife's Christmas present this year, 50th Birthday and my, I really appreciate your hard, work as she pursues her Phd in education all roled up into one...I am the lucky guy who gets to drive it, once in a while, and care for it...it too is quickly becoming a garage queen due to its condition and the length of time it took me to find a real one after many disapointments. By the way, my last Benz was a 1966 200 sedan that I had for 9 years prior to buying the Spider. When I let her go it had 249K on it and the person I sold her to put an additional 25K on it before he took her to the bone yard due to rust.

Thanks again for your inteligent input on this.

Antonino

If you have a penchant for a particular "brand", your mind has been possessed by marketing hype.

The only relevant choices are the API service specification and selecting a viscosity range that is appropriate for the anticipated cold start ambient temperature range.

Markg,

Are you saying your oil was clear after more than 5 minutes in your diesel?

Wow ... my experience on mine have always been the same ... change the oil, then crank to run it through the passages and fill the filter, then shutdown, then check - it has always been black even at this point.
