Oil Temperature Question
 

Not another oil thread, I'm not that crazy......

Just purchased a Mityvac Fluid Evacuator. In the brochure it says maximum allowable fluid temperature is 175 F, so....what is the oil temperature on a fully warmed 103 or 104 engine in a 70 F ambient? I'm guessing it varies significantly with the ambient temp. Yes No?

Will use it mostly for the other fluids as the oil drain plug is easy to access but would like to know in case I really get lazy. Thanks!

Oil temp lags behind coolant temp a good bit at first warmup. From there on, RPM has a great impact on it.

I had an 83 GTI with an oil temp guage. It would turn 4K at 70. The oil temp went to 120*C at highway speed i the summer. I have a Ford conversion van ( E150) with a 351 V8 and 3.55 gears. After a highway run - if I check the oil it is VERY hot. Hotter than a typical car. Around town it is just average, but with those gears the engine is spinning a bit.

So I would suggest a short-ish run up to operating temp (coolant) and to warm up the oil. My guess might be a couple to 5 miles. I know many of the diesels have 8 quart pans and would take longer, not sure about the size of the pans in gas engines. If they are that large I would add mileage.

175° F = 79.444° C which is a little cooler than average engine operating temperature... which you can read on your temp gage in the cabin.

I have never had a temp problem when using the Mityvac on an oil change. If you use the plastic tubing, it seems the tubing starts to soften up and cave in a little bit reducing the flow of hot oil out of the engine. After a ten minute drive, the oil temp on the M10 does not seem to get an warmer than 160F, I have never had a problem with changing it while doing that.
