C220 Head Gasket

Hey guys, my car's starting to smell like Coolant after every 10 minute or more drive. Also in the garage i've noticed over the last couple of months the build up of oil droplets. I took it to a mechanic down the street, and he thinks its the head gasket on it. He told me to just keep driving it till i start losing oil.??? But the smell of coolant is quite noticeable and can't seem to be healthy. ?!? What do you guys think? should I keep driving the car like he's advised me? I'm double minded. I just don't want to damage my engine, as my transmission is also starting to act up and clunck during shifts. Do I risk any damage? also how much should the head gasket replacement repair cost me on this model? should i get it done from a dealer? or indy? anyone else had this problem? thanks
