Fuel Gauge

1987 benz 300E W124 Trans.722.358.....

When the fuel gauge indicates below 1/2 tank, suddenly starts moving up and down inconsistently.

Also trans slips at take off when the 1st overdrive goes down after that vehicle respond normal to acceleration with out slipping or hesitation. If the take off is done not more than 15mph the OD changes fine.

Any advice?
