240d leaking from filter housing NO OLD O-RING IN THE GROOVE!!
The car is a 1979 240d 123 chassis.
I am having trouble with oil gushing from around the o-ring on the filter housing. It has happened twice when starting the car. There is no second o-ring. The groove is shiny aluminum, the o-ring is seating against the metal on both sides. The housing and the top are coming together metal to metal. Twice now the o-ring has pushed out in one spot. It seams that the top of the housing is flexing enough for the o-ring to get out. Why does it seem there is so much pressure in the filter housing. Thanks, Jason |
Could it be an incorrect filter? Maybe too tall?
Maybe a piece of an old filter like an old rubber grommet plugging the filter drain? Defective O rings from some 3rd world country? |
thanks for the tips. I am pretty sure the filter is correct, as I mentioned, the housing and cap are coming together metal to metal. I will check for junk in the drain. What is puzzling is that it happened once, I changed the filter and o-ring, the car I thought was fixed until a couple days ago it happened again. I had gone several days after I fixed it before it happened the second time.
Thanks, Jason |
What brand and number of filter are you using?

if the
filter is correct and the o ring is there, then your filter houseing must be damaged. the top or body bent or otherwise distorted. look carefully and if so find another filter housing...at least the lid.
