Tired of the alarm, how to disconnect?
 

86 560sl, stinking alarm goes off on it's own, can't shut it off. Even drove down the road with the alarm on this morning. Tried every key position I can think (red dot key), even took to slamming the doors to get it to stop.

Where and what do I pull to take the alarm out of the system entirely?

Had the same problem on an 88 300SEL. Nobody pays any attention to them anyway. I drove down the street with lights flashing and horn honking right past a cop car. He didn't give it a thought. The control unit is generally in the passenger foot well. Remove the carpet and big protective board. The unit says Becker on it and has two plugs. CAUTION There is a plug connection in that area that is RED. Do not mess with the RED plug unless you want to deploy your air bag just to see if it works.:D

On the 560SL, it's behind the glove box; just unplug both plugs like I did on mine.

Thanks for clearing that up, Paul. SLs are sometimes different like sticking the fuel pump relay way back there too.

Would an after-market alarm(Clifford) by chance plug into the same spot originally occupied by the factory unit or is it's setup completely different?

I realize this might be a tough question, but am also SICK of this unit as I've long suspected it's responsible for a long-standing battery drain issue.

Would love to get rid of this thing, but fear I'd disable the ign. in the process.

OK, behind the glove box? What am I looking for when I get back there? Is it obvious?

I can't remember exactly where it was as I removed years ago; however, I do remember removing the interior of the glove box to find it. Looking at the unit now sitting on my garage shelf, it has 2 plugs an 8 pin and 16 pin. It has part number 126 820 08 26 on the sticker outside.

Someone talk me off the ledge...
 

I pulled the two cables to the alarm box (they were connected to the box that was ticking with the alarm going off)-and the alarm quit (of course I had already disconnected the battery). End of story? Nah.

After that I started the car just to make sure I hadn't pulled the wrong connection. No problem.

I put the glovebox back in and turned the key, crank, crank, crank, no start. Crank, crank, no start. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

This car needs a cliff and big shove.

Any chance the fuel pump relay got knocked loose? As I understand it from following this thread, you had to pull the glove box to access the alarm control.

Now it starts.....
 

Sits for about an hour, twisted the key, starts right up. I hate these intermittent probs. I want my wife to be able to drive this car from time to time, can't leave her stranded.

I am impressed how you gleaned info from the thread. I wish everyboby read that carefully. It gets tiresome when someone posts a problem like: car won't start even after recharging the battery. A few posts later someone chimes in with," sounds like the battery could be dead. Did you try recharging it.":D :D

didn't knock anything loose. This car has a ghost in it that for some unknown reason, it will not start on fairly frequent occasions. After replacing the coil, fuel filter and both pumps, and checking the relays, still had the problem. A wise poster to this forum suggested that it might be due to a non-factory gas cap. After changing to a proper cap, the starting issue went away for about 2 weeks so I thought I was done with it, only to see it return yesterday.

It started just fine this morning however so I guess I'll muddle through somehow.

It seems you have an intermittent issue. I'm dealing with one as well, although I "think" I have it figured out.

You have changed a lot of items that can cause this, but I wonder if maybe a faulty ignition switch( the part that plugs in from the back) could be ailing you? I have not studied a schematic for this item and therefore wonder if it could supply elect. to turn the starter, but not necessarily the ign. circuit?

I know this is a big shot in the dark, but........ could it possibly be the OVP? It could be the answer to a lot of your problems. It sure can cause strange things to go on!

I pulled and inspected the OVP back in the fall, doesn't seem to be the problem, but I suppose it could be related.

These are the symptoms:

Sometimes won't start, usually this happens after a few stops, you know like take the kids to school, go get a haircut, go to the grocery-no start in the parking lot.

Or, every once in a blue moon it will just die while driving. Not apparently electrical since the radio and lights don't go off when it dies.

Usually if it sits for 30 mins or more it will fire right up, that's what led me to the gas cap theory-and indeed when it stalls, and I open the gas cap, it will fire right up (that is until yesterday, when it wouldn't fire even then at all until it sat for an hour.)

I can deal with it, but I don't want my wife to get stranded and have to put up with the panic that goes with that.
