Q about switching VIN #

Say if u have an old rusty car, somehow u found a car with no reg, decided to switch VIN #. Is it illegal? Or keep your damn mouth shut.

In addition to state and local laws, tampering or misrepresenting the VIN is a federal offense, with a maximum 5 year imprisonment. 18 USC sec. 511(a)

So don't screw with it. Don't switch license plates either.

Somebody switched the plates on SWMBO's Stratus one night. I noticed that the rear plate was upside down No plate on the front
Cost us $45 for new plates

Why would you want to do this unless you are trying to cover up something under the history of the old VIN, which is why it is illegal.
