New, and have some minor problems

Hey Everyone,
I was fortunate and just picked me up a 1984 300 SD with about 240,000 miles on it for $1,000. Mechanically, it is very sound with the only problem being a leaky center injector (I bought it in Washington, and proceeded to drive it home to Utah later the same day). However, for only $1,000 it is not without its problems, a couple of which I need to fix before I can use it as my daily driver.

1. The turn signals do not work. When you move the lever to either side, the signals do not even try to engage (not even inside on the dash), however, if you turn on the hazard flashers, all the lights and everything work just fine. Any ideas?

2. None of the interior dome and many of the switch lights (the soft light that glows from behind the switches) do not work.

3. The door lock system doesn’t work.

Those are the main things I’m concerned with, and would like to get working right now. My Dad is a mechanic and has been for 40 years so don’t worry about using mechanical jargon with me, and I have checked all the fuses already.

Also, I think I may have a European model, but I am not sure (there are a lot of little differences from my 1983 and 1985 to this one). Is there anything I can look at or for that would tell me if it is or not? I don’t care one way or the other, just curious.

Thank you in advance for any help or input you have to offer, I appreciate it.

the injectors

themselves seldom leak. so carefully check the small fabric fuel return lines and the hard lines. the hard lines will take a lot of torque so dont be afraid to tighten them.

sometimes you can get the turns to work by fiddling with the flasher, which is under the switch, just push in the small edges of it and pull straight up. if that doesnt work replace it.

the door locks are prob a vac issue, check the lines. there is a big junction under the floor mat on the pass side for that too.

the lights prb need new bulbs. not to hard a job. be sure to know how to get the dash out. dont pry it. there are some screws up in the top of the opening for the ash tray.

sounds like you got a pretty nice benz there, enjoy. t hey are pretty mechanic friendly once you get to know them. you will hardly ever break a bolt. and after workinng on a benz you will hate working on other cars.

If the Vin starts WDB its a US model, Euro's start 126 or something like that.

Also I am 70% sure the diesel W126 was never offered in Europe.

Replace the injector return lines they are probably cracked from age and leaking.
