300ce/w124 ignition coil
 
Hello list,

I have a question for the list re "aftermarket ignition coils". e:G MSD or Mallory etc

Has anybody tried them.

The mercedes ones are big $$$$$!

I know the Mercedes ones are for our car, but I often wonder if we are being taken for ride with Bosch.

Please advise your thoughts

Any ELECTRONIC coil will work......you don't have to buy the OE coil.
My '92 300e is going to get a Audi/VW coil.:cool:

Just don't get that Holley, Flame Thrower(?) crap. MSD and Mallory products are fine.....in the right place.

Hello,

Thanks for your response.

I'm looking to get slightly larger HT volts, I believe the Bosch unit is 15KV.

My 1989 300ce coil is triggered via the Electronic Ignition Control Unit[N1/2]. My concern is what load capacity is this unit capable of handling. Putting a non-standard coil on might blow this unit, because of the larger power drain[maybe??]

What do you think?

What decided you on Audi/VW coil?

Please advise

Hello,

I checked the specs for the 1989 300e/ce and they say that the HT voltage varies between 6-16kvolts. However in another area where they discuss the testing of the ignition, it says the specs are 8kv and 20kv? Also there should not be a variance between cyl of more 3kv. Something I didn't relealise is, as the rpm is increased so does the HT power. In other words at idle its quite a bit lower then at 3000rpm. Consequently all your HT wires, plugs, cap, coil and rotor are not in good working condition then you may get missing at idle because of the much lower voltage available.

I always assumed the voltage was constant?

There's a little more to learn about Kv's at differnt engine loads.
Adverage Kv at idle on most systems is 12 to 14 KV. Lower indicates low compression....small gap....low wire/plug resistence. fuel mixing, head design, and coil saturation along with switching cause other minor changes in rise time...duration...levels and collapse.

This last site supplied me with a VW system for my turbo engine in an air coled van......was impressed with the system.

I'm usng an Audi coil 'cose I got lot' of 'em.:D
