Reliable local mechanic quotes $800+ to replace head gasket to stop leak. 95 e320 has 101k mi. Since he's going in, he suggests replacing 'looms' because they deteriorate and get brittle with time. If not and looms are damaged during repair, car may come back with rough idle, etc. Doesn't make mechanic look good because problem comes right after new gasket work. Quote is another $600+.

What are looms? Are price quotes reasonable?

Thanks.

I'm guessing he's referring to the wiring harness or the injector wiring harness. Your car is really not old enough to be having that kind of a problem. Do a visual inspection of the wiring harness. If it has deteroiated to the point of needing replacement, you will know when you examine the wiring. If the mechanic is concerned about diagnosis and "looking good", ask him the basis for his suggestion regarding the wiring, if..that's what he is talking about. Get better information about what he is thinking about.

The engine wiring harness on these cars will either have been replaced or will be replaced. Use the search function on the top right of page to get a reading on this. You need to unwrap the friction tape like covering to get to the wires, and if they are bad it is readily noticed.
If you are the first or second owner MB has been known to pick up the tab on both the harness and the head gasket. Go to the dealer and use your saddest face, you might get it all taken care of. Ed

I believe that this engine has enough miles that you should do a valve job while the head is off. It will be money well spent.

Good luck,
