Tyre rotation - what goes where?
 

Reading a few posts about tyres has made me think about rotating and rebalancing my tyres since its around 5k since I replaced all four. Can anyone tell me the correct way to do this?

Should it be swap front and back, keeping the same sides, or swap diagonal corners?

Tyres and rims are the same front and rear, 124 chassis.

On my 94 E320 I move the rear wheels to the front on the same side, and move the left front to the right rear and the right front to the left rear. Have done this every 5,000 miles on my current tires (currently at 20,000 miles) and they are wearing very evenly. Try posting this question on the Wheels and Tires Forum.

Depends on the tire type. If you have directional tread (look for a little arrow on the sidewall with the phrase "rotation") you have to rotate front to rear, keeping tires on their original side. Had to do that with early radials too, else the belts would separate. If you don't have directional tires, thanks to vast improvements in radials, you can rotate to opposite corners LR to RF, etc. If all five tires are in fact 5K miles new and you have a full size spare, consider putting the spare on the RR, moving RR to LF and work your way around the car with the LR going into the spare well.

i have never found it necessary to rotate mb tires.

now if i had a 500e and used a lot of throttle all the time i might.

mine always seem to wear evenly on benzes.

I have found a lot of MBs tend to wear front tires significantly more on the sides and rear tires down the center. Using the rotation method in post number 2, I was able to get over 80,000 miles out fo a set of Michelin MXV4s on a C280.

That's why I always question M-B's recommended tirepressures.

Front = 28 p.s.i. ( weight of engine + 28 p.s.i. = underinflation = outside treadwear ).

Rear = 32 p.s.i. ( normally no weight in the back + 32 p.s.i. = overinflation = centre treadwear ).

Note: Pure speculation on my part. :D

i follow mb recommendations and have no problem.

i generally run michelins in the recommended sizes.

and i dont find any need to rotate.
