Question 94 E420 LED Code 6

Hi folks,

I was graced by the check engine light today. Pushed the button on the LED device, and got 6 flashes back.
I need to make Arthur's code reader gadget now, don't I?

What realm of electrical magic does this code 6 point towards anyway? The car behaves "normally" so far, the only thing worth mentioning is that the last few months it's been a little hard to start when warm.

Thanks!

-Larry

Incorrect info...stick to ebaying the tool..

Larry,
Your car has 38 pin and you want to start by going to EA/CC module and see what is there at pin 7... do 17 while you are there.
Clear the CE for now..

I'm sorry, Arthur is correct. I thought you had an E320, not 420. My bad.

Update

I suppose that I could blame a subdued panic on my part, for not checking further for more codes.

Pushing the button to show the LED codes revealed two more codes: 17 and 26.
(I haven't gotten to the Shack yet to build the reader gadget)

I also noticed a noise that seems new to me. It is a medium high pitched "wheeeeeeeeee" and it seems to be coming from the intake area - does the air mass sensor make any sort of noise?? Also, I am pretty sure I smelled gasoline - not copious amounts, but enough to be definitely noticable (while I was looking/listening for the noise).

I cleared the codes today - I'll see if they come back tomorrow.

Read those codes on my web page
Menu#6 = Diag Module
06 Idle speed control inoperative
17 Data exchange malfunction between individual control modules
26 Upshift delay 2 to 3 (all models)

. . . and the others (if any) when you build the 'reader'.
Maybe a vacuum line cracked?? or broken??

Thanks Jim, ... I went to your site already and read up on the 3 codes so far. (I got a #19 fix from you a while back)

Tonight, after making the reader, I went to see if the check engine light had come back on - It had not. While I had the ignition on, I pushed the button to see if the LED would speak to me - it did not.
Then I started the car - a little hard to start, as has been the case for some time now. Wouldn't you know it! the Check engine light came on! Weeell...I went to push the button (after turning off the car), but ....there was no code! What the?? I thought. So, I turn off the ignition...even take the key out, and turn the ignition back on....push the button for codes....Nothing.

The noise I wrote about in an earlier post is still there, although now there is an occasional click. Also the pitch was higher at first (like you might expect from a vacuum leak) but then went to the medium high pitch.

This is getting to be weird.

PS: Upon examining the diagnostic plug, I decided that I must have mis-read Arthur's plans....the "test" banana plug that I have, is way to big for those little tiny holes. (whoops )

Update

This is getting weird. Yesterday and today there is no CE light. I know I wasn't hallucinating thursday night.

Figures....now that I have the code reader built, it won't give me the satisfaction of interrogation.

The code tool is not for the CE lamp Diagnostic Module. It is a tool so you can access the other modules.
The built-in LED/SW is for the CE lamp.

*Note on tool pictoral:
On the tool , the pictoral was in response to a post for the 16 pin diagnostic box and are specific to the 16 pin.. that is why the leads have banannas on the end.. the tool is the same for the 38 pin except for the required smaller plugs.

Results

OK...I managed to modify my reader a little and got the following results:

Pin 7: 6 & 14
Pin 17: 1 (I read that 1 flash means no codes stored)

I also decided to test some other pins....

Pin 8: 5
Pin 6: 13 & 30

All other pins either returned one flash or none(Pin19 I think) or lit up the LED continuously (Pin14).

Suggest you categorize them by 'function' rather than pin . .
Anway here's what they mean.

EA/CC/ISC; Pin 7:
DTC 6; Starter lock-out/backup lamp switch (S16/3)
DTC 14; Closed throttle position contact switch (S29/3)

LH_SFI Module: Pin 4
Should read those codes

DI Module: Pin 17: No Faults

Base Module: Pin 8
DTC 5; Max allowable temp exceeded in Module Box F23! <-- blower motor may be dead!

ABS/ASR; Pin 6:
DTC 13; Stop Lamp switch
DTC 30; CAN data line to EA/CC/ISC module (N4/1)

Probably should reset them all and check again in a few weeks to see what's come back.

Thank you for the info Jim!

As far as the max temp. exceeded in the module box... Is there a separate blower for the box, or are you referring to the blower motor for the climate control? (it is currently stuck on low - I am guessing I need a new porcupine).

The stop lamp switch code might be an old one that wasn't cleared....I had the switch replaced a while back.

The other codes, naturally, worry me a little. I will reset the codes, probably tomorrow, and check for codes in .....? a few days? or at least a week?

Thanks again!

-Larry

PS: I'm pretty sure that the other testable pins gave me 1 flash back (with the exception of Pin 19 & 14, as noted above)

I think you see a separate blower attached to the F23 module box. As I remember it coupled via tube into the box. . maybe it's 'broke' or the blower's motor quit???

Reset the codes and read them in a week or two.
