rear wheel bearing
 

I need to replace rear wheel bearing on my 1994 E320 wagon. Seem to be a long job useing benz special tools.
Can this be done at home with the use of regular pullers etc.

Yes you can if you don't mind removing the wheel carrier from the car, have a hydraulic press, several appropriately sized large sockets to press the bearings in and out and don't mind buying a new brake backing plate for each side (these get damaged when you press out the old bearings). I bought the Sir Tools bearing removal tool kit to try to replace the rear bearings on my 91 300TE and ended up stripping the large bolt in the kit attempting to pull a bearing. The bearing tool does warn that it only works on singular bearings as apposed to double row bearings as installed on the 124 and other MB's. I know of several indie shops that don't mess with the special MB puller tool either since it costs a small fortune and the somewhat rare wagons appear to be the vehicles that have the most rear wheel bearing trouble. I took a few precautions and maybe just got lucky but I used this tool successfully on my 1992 300TE 4matic right rear wheel bearing. See post in other thread.

That's great! I believe the care you took in aligning the tool to obtain a straight pull (and protecting the backing plate in the process) made this possible. Good job and great write-up in your other post. Mark
