560 Valve Cover Gasket

Chasing down an oil leak, I removed the valve cover gasket from the passenger's side of my 560SEL.

There are some areas where it looks rough and I'm considering either replacing it or using some sealent to really button it up pending advice.

Facts:
*This valve cover gasket is 1.5 years / 2,000 miles old running with Mobil1 15w50 synthetic.
*Valve cover bolts were torqued to 4Nm
*Rear valve cover bolts were more difficult to remove than 4Nm torque would suggest.

Thanks all!

The seal should be soft and flexible with no hard spots. 2K miles isn't much but given that the seal is 1.5 years in place I would replace with a new seal...no sealant material required. Just be sure the seal and sealing surface (head deck) are clean, dry and free of any oil. Also make sure that you have those little copper washers for the valve cover bolts.
