89 300SE Using Oil????

Recently purchased a 1989 300SE with 110,000 miles. The car runs excellent, but it is usiing about a quart of oil per 1000 miles. The car does not leak or smoke, and I checked the plugs and they were dry. So I can't figure out where the oil is going. Is this typical for this model?
