124 trans specs
 
hey im petty sure my 87 300e has a 722.3 trans and im wondering what torque to tighten both the pan bolts and the drain plug to? i was also wondering how much trans fluid needed both for the torque converter and for the transmission iteself... thanks:D

Filter bolts 35 in.lbs
Pan bolts 71 in.lbs
Valve body bolts 71 in.lbs
Drain plug 35 in.lbs.

About 7.5 Quarts, always buy an extra quart.

whats the preferred method for draining the torque converter on the 124? mine isnt open like the old 123s so i cant turn it to expose the drain plug... if i cant get it off im just going to fill the trans up without draining it but i dont know the exact quantity of the trans minus converter also ive heard around 6.3 qts for the whole thing :confused:

Huh? Sure you can drain the converter. Crawl under there with a large straight slot screwdriver and a flashlight. Rotate the Converter by leveraging the screwdriver between the cast housing surrounding the converter and the converter. You will eventually see the drain plug come into view.

Drain it. Drain the Transmission. Refill with about 5 quarts or so. Start up and cycle through each gear. Slowly fill until you are about 10mm below the min mark on the stick. Reading the stick can be very tricky after adding fluid.
It tends to move from the sides of the tube to the stick, making it hard to see the actual level. 10mm below generally will put the fluid at the correct hot level after 30 minutes of driving.

Buy an inch pound torque wrench. Use only a name brand transmission filter and gasket kit.

Alternatively, you can measure how much ATF was drained out. Fill about 95% of the amount drained, warm up the car, and top up. You do not have to fill the torque converter and tranny pan separately. All ATF fills through the dipstick.

Its best too have more then less oil, you can always take it back, Read both sides of the dip stick, and the lowest reading is the true level. Use a good 5mm Allen Socket when removing the TC drain plug. Always turn the engine in the direct of its rotation. The timing chain and components are design to turn one way only.

Valvoline Dextron Mercon 3
 
I looked through all of my work shop manuals and there is only mention of Dextron Mercon -2 did Dextron Mercon 3 replace 2? is valvoline a good brand to use on a transmission service for my 1992 300-E L6 3.0. automatic transmission.

I am also confused as to the approprate level on the dip stick at which the fluid should be warm at 80C after a 15 minute drive. I noticed my fluid level was a hair to the first line on the dip stick. is the second notch were the transmission fluid should be cold or hot?

I know where the access holea are, but would someone be more specific regarding exactly where to place the screw driver for leverage without damaging anything.

Would synthetic be better than dino ATF for my 94 e320 Wagon?

Answered my own question about "where" to position screwdriver. That was embarrassingly easy when putting screw driver directly onto torque converter and moving it clockwise when facing engne. My reputation of "breaking more than I fix" always makes me apprehensive when venturing into the unknown. Temps to be in high 90's this week = good day to soften gasket to fit trans pan. Now to decide on 1/4" torque wrench to do 8nm bolts. Synthetic vs dino fluid = more decisions.
