Where to buy top control unit for CLK?

After spending $300 for diagnostic work to check an inoperative conv. top on my '01 CLK the shop concluded that the control unit is bad. I can get a new one from the dealer for $600. Any other choice besides a junk yard? Does anyone reman them? Can you buy them direct from VDO?
