Chrome Horseshoes on the Grille,on German MB, what's up?

I have seen those big chrome horseshoes mounted on the grille of German plated Mercedes, everything from W123 sedans to new G wagens?

What's up with that? Does it mean good luck or something??

You don't see them often, but you do see them consistently; justs wondering that's all.

Just some people " horsing " around.

Really, I think the people that have them are into horses ( gambling, etc. ).
