HELP!! How Do I Get The Clutch Fan Off?
How Do I Get The Clutch Fan Off? I have a 1991 190e 2.6. I need to get the clutch fan off but there is only about 2" of space btween the radiator and the clutch. Ive tried an alan socket, and a regular alan wrench to no avail. Special tool? Grind one down? Remove the radiator?
Im lost! There must be an easier way to get this thing off! Everything else on this car is so accessible. Thanks foe any help guys!! |

First the fan shroud probably needs to come off. Then I use a 8mm allen wrench, extending the handle using a 12mm deep socket on a 18" breaker bar to break the bolt loose. You will need to fashion some sort of holding rod, inserted through the back of fan clutch pulley (driver's side), to keep the pulley from turning. There is a little groove cast into the fan clutch bearing bracket that you'll need to align with a hole in the pulley.
Install is the reverse, except to get the torque value right I use the special 8mm short allen head on a 3/8" torque wrench. Don't forget to remove the holding rod after reinstalling. |
on my 260E 1988, I made a tool like the one described by the link mentioned by 5280BENZ, it is a rod 6mm diametre bended around 45 degrees lenght 300 mm on one side and 20/30 mm on the other. It is intended to block the rotation while unscreewing the central screw.
good luck |
