My car is full of oversoray paint from the kitchen cabinet painter.I took the car to two Detailers,one will remove the overspray with a clay bar for 350.00 and the other will remove it for 175.00 but he is going to use Mineral Spirits. My question is, is Mineral Sperits safe or will it remove all of the clear coat,and damage the rubber trim?

i dont know for sure, but i dont think mineral spirits will harm your finish.

but before turning him loose i would see a certificate of insurance.

Get your own clay bar and do it yourself. I can clay a car in less than an hour.

I don't think a clay bar alone will remove paint from clearcoat...I think you would need some sort of mineral spirit to soften the paint a bit and then maybe use a clay bar to rub it off...but the mineral spirit is not gonna be good for the clearcoat...

Ahh contraire my friend,,,, we use it all the time and it will get the most serious overspray off. That stuff is amazing.:D

find out what kind of paint the guy used on the cabinets, then you can research a thinner.

this image of the guy spraying your cabinets and getting your benz reminds me of the old "paint the porch" story.

He set up a plastic spray booth in my garage and told us not to open the garage.We came home one day only to see him spraying with the garage door open.My car was parked ten feet away.

are you sure you didnt tell him to paint the porch?

this kind of thing is the adventure of getting things built. and is why i now prefer to build my own designs.

A friend of mine as a joke painted grafiti all over a beater that I drove to college. I did not care about the grafiti but some of it was "offensive" in nature. I was able to use mineral spirits to remove the spray paint with really good results. My friend was really annoyed to see his nice paint job that he had spent so much time on completely gone.

If your detailer is careful you should have no problems. You will have to rewax the car as the mineral spirits remove all of the wax. Depending on your paint job you might see an improvement in color and shine if he strips the whole car. Do make sure he is insured though because clear coats are quite thin and fragile. A little too much solvent and its time for a spray booth.

Speaking of clear coat I am wondering if you can use solvents like this to remove a clear coat. I have a spot on the hood of my Volvo that I have been waxing like a fiend and the dull goes away and comes back a few months later I know that the real problem is the clear coat is going. If I could have the clear coat stripped and resprayed it would save repainting the whole car.

Today i used Clay and after one hour,and alot of elbow grese,the overspray is all gone.I don't know how this stuff works,like where does all of the paint i removed go,and can i use this same bar over again?Can the bar be cleaned to remove all of the crap?
