Auxilliary Fan Resistor Gets Hot!

Today I noticed that the auxilliary fan resistor on my 560SL was very hot when the fan was running. Is this normal? I suspect that It might be since it is made from ceramic, and it is located right behind the grill. Mine has a crack in the ceramic. Is this a problem? The meter shows continuity across it but I was not able to read the accurate resistance with my meter.
