190E 2.3-16v New Alternator woes

My old alternator crapped itself the other day. My volt meter in the car was pegged at 16 volts. I replaced the voltage regulator less than a year ago and when i took it out one of the brushes was completely spent and the regulator itself was brittle. We figured a diode blew in the alternator and bought a new one from mercedes. After getting everything off the shaft of the old one, I started attempting to put it on the new one. How ever, the woodruff key would not go all the way in. I then read on the store here at mercedes shop that it does not require a woodruff key. If that is true, then why is there a milled place to put one? Also, The shaft looks shorter than the old one, this could mess up the alignment of the drive belt and shred it.

Does anyone know that this alternator is acceptable as is, or is there something else I must do before I install it?

Thanks,
Jim

mostly a 'bump'

Are you sure the euro alternator is identical to the USA version? The pully has to line up in the same place when it is all said and done. Did you remove the spacer on the front shaft as per the directions in fastlane? Check the two milling slots in the shafts to see if they are identical.

cheers,

I just put the alternator in, and it looks like it fits, I did not remove the spacer, there are two so I am not sure which one would be removed. two spacers separate the pulley from the fan, one is thick, one is thinner. the thinner one has a larger radius. So which one is it?

Thanks,
Jim

I also noticed that this alternator does not have the long bolts that go all the way through the alternator. The ends of the bolts are used to attach the plastic cover for the back and the heat shield on the back on the current alternator. The heat shield and such are still required, correct? Should I just go to a hardware store and pick up some bolts in order to attach the heat shield and cover, or should I continue to attempt to get the bolts out of the old one? The bolts are pretty much locked in there and I am mangling the screw heads trying to get them out

Thanks,
Jim
