I OWN A EURO SPEC 350SE W116, WICH I HAVE JUST RUN AGAINST A 1980 280SE W116 EURO ON A LONG STRECH OF ROAD.
FROM PULL-A-WAY THE 280SE PULLED ME BY AT LEAST 15METERS, I COULD NEVER CATCH UP WITH THE 280SE, AT ABOUT 180KMh I RAN HEAD TO HEAD WITH THE 280SE, AT 200KM/H I WAS ONLY HALF A CARS LENGHT IN FRONT OF THE 280SE, AND I COULD NOT GET AWAY FUTHER THAT A CARS LENGHT OVER A TOTAL DISTANCE OF 7 MILES. IS THE 280SE REALY THIS QUICK, OR IS MY 350SE SLOW ![]() MAN OH MAN I WAS IMPRESSED (AND EMBARRESED) BY THIS 280SE |

I find it a bit difficult to imagine these 2 big sedans in a drag race, that's not what one thinks of when you think of cars like these...
The W116 was really built to be a long distance, luxury, long lasting high speed cruiser - not to be fast off the line, so I wouldn't worry about it. I heard once that the 3.5 engine was one of the finest engines Mercedes ever built, so I would feel comfortable with that..... Perhaps a bit of online research might reveal the 0-60 performance times for each engine in that body, and you must know in what state of tune your motor is in..... Maybe your motor is heavier, and you have lots of items in your trunk which adds weight to make it slower, I can't think why your car should be that much slower than the 280SE, lighter motor, different rear end ratio, who knows? I wouldn't worry about it so much, just keep your car in good shape Best, Jim

I've driven a W109 3.5, W116 350SE, W123 280E and W126 280SE. Seat-of-the-pants feel says the 2.8s cannot keep up with the 3.5s. Stopwatch may disagree.
