Blower Fan Help please!

I have a 1983 300D. I've been lurking here for a while, I bought this car off a buddy of mine. I've been chasing this gremin down now for about a year- the blower fan doesnt work.

However, it works... sometimes. Like after a hard bump, for 30 seconds.

It also decides that it will work, when you push the bottom of the spindle. As long as you hold it there, it will spin really fast!

I've applied 12V directly, and it spins without a hitch.

i've taken it out, bought a junk yard one, etc etc, cleaned the bushings.. no good.

Other than the fact that it works when you push the bottom of the spindle... im leaning to the fact that it sounds like the blower controller. I noticed there are 3 wires, leading to a two prong outlet- what is the third wire controlling?

Finally, to diagnose the controller, how do I remove the glove box? Just pull the plastic rivets?

Thanks folks!

are you telling me the bushings are the reason that I push on the bottom of the stator, that it works?

Or are you teling me something else?

Before I purchase parts and toss it at it, i'd like to know the theory and symptoms of the situation.

There's no particular reason that it shouldnt work- and why it works when you press on the bottom. There's also no rhme or reason it works outside on a bench test.

THese two factors are co-existing, yet would indicate different problems.

Sounds like worn brushes

Many posts here of blowers working intermittently and starting after being hit only to go quiet again.

Pushing up on the spindle allows the brushes to make contact with a part of the commutator that is not worn and thus completes the electrical circuit.

Ahh, gotcha. I tried a search and after reading about 200 posts... I still hadnt seen anything about pushing on the stator! lol.

These bushing kits... I checked mb source as someone has recommended, they dont have it listed in their catalog. Is there a part number/other source for brushes? MB dealer?
