500E aux fans question
Can/do both of the electric fans go bad at the same time? And which relay is it outside/above of the fuse box that controls them?
Car has new OE radiator, hoses, thermostat, coolant, and JimFs cooling harness...no air in system. The weather has only gotten pretty warm recently and the fans aren't kicking on when stopped in traffic I'm noticing. Any ideas? TIA Runs about 80 C most of the time, but shoots up to over 100 C off the highway. BTW, car has 148K on it ...I know other 500E owners who have lost one fan...but both at the same time? |

I'm thinking to hotwire one at a time, and find out for sure.
Or, you can suspect the old fashioned spring resistor mounted on the fenderwell, right behind the drivers headlight. (go to fastlane for picture)

Yes , got it, Thank you Larry !
The fans do spin freely and power up seperately. The dropping resistor behind the drivers headlite IS definitely looking like a billion years old though. Very much rusted and tired looking. Got one on order and I hope that is where the problem lies. Relays and fuses (new OE) are good as is the upper wiring harness to the temp sender (semi-new). |
