1987 300TDT Cruise Control not working

My cruise control has not worked since I've purchased my 1987 300TDT. Is there a common problem with the cruise on these models? Is there a way to trouble shoot the problem? I see the two main electrical parts of the cruise control are expensive. Thanks in advance for any feedback.
