Engine noise
 

On my 95 e320, there seems to be a constant cricket noise coming from the front of the engine block, radiator, condensor area. It sounds when the car is hot, it's not so loud when idling or changing from "P" to "D," but once you're driving, either foward or reverse, it gets louder and faster (1000-3500rpm). I could deal with a one or two engine noises but this one's really obnoxious. Thanks in advance.

Well let's think this through. Noise is related to RPM. Therefore it is coming from something that is rotating. There are a limited number of rotating pieces attached to the front of your engine. Air Pump, Alternator, A/C Compressor, Power Steering Pump, Water Pump, idler pulleys for the serpentine belt, and the fan.

Nobody on this list can diagnose a noise from a statement that there is a noise. So what to do?

Go to McParts and buy a $10.00 auto stethoscope. Start the car and have someone manipulate the throttle until they hear the noise. Now carefully proceed to place the probe against the various rotating components until you find the culprit.

I'm beginning to think it's coming from the serpentine belt, do you or anyone know how to remove the belt or identify the idler pulleys for me?

Stick a screwdriver into the top eye of the tensionor shock/damper mount and twist it to see if the noise stops
Common wear spot on these shocks.
There was a mid-yr change , so you may not have one.

Zounds like it could be anyone of z following items:

• Idler pulley
• Fan bearing bracket
• Tensioner roller
• Water pump

You can use a long screw driver as a stethoscope, place it on the indvidual idler pullies, move it to the fan bearing bracket and voila.........you vill uncover z culprit.
