Is that the original hose?

If so, it has lost a lot of its resiliency and there are probably pockets of air or vapor that condense when cooling creating a vacuum and causing the hose to collapse.

I think the connections are for various temperature sensors (probably the dash gauge and A/C switches) but have you tried (when the system is -COMPLETELY COOL-, of course!!!), removing the expansion tank cap? The cap is supposed to allow "vacuum" in as well as pressure out. Maybe it's not working.

Your coolant cap is not allowing air back into the cooling system and probably needs to be replaced.

Mine does that to a more minor degree on my '95 diesel. Mechanic told me it was normal.

As stated previous to my post, your expansion tank cap is bad.

From personal experience, I've learned this is one item to buy from an MB dealer. I've had all sort of problems with the ones sold anywhere else.
