fuel leak when running 1988 300CE

it must be the injectors or something. I can see the fuel run back down the fuel line. It drips a little right under the drivers seat. But only when the car has been running. Where should I look? perhaps the first place to check would be where the fuel line ends up at the motor. Any thoughts? its a car I just bought a couple days ago. There is a very recent receipt for a new fuel pump relay. Perhaps too much fuel is going to the injectors? Or it could be the fitting at the end of the delivery line. The motor was mickey moused a bit the last couple of years. Before that it was maintained correctly. I hope the pre-cats are not getting burned out.

Thanks in advance,
Jason

just took the car out at a quarter tank to see how long it takes to get the empty light to come on. It didn't take long at all! I have been scrolling thru searches and still I have to ask. What's wrong? This thing drinks fuel like nobody's business. I smell fuel around the vent line area and again at the injectors. I want to take care of it. I dont want the pre-cats to get trashed. The guy that had the car for the last six months did not take care of this. He thought it might just be a leak in the line. I think its two leaks. Any ideas? Or what should I do? I'll go to Enrique as soon as I get it smogged. Hopefully on Saturday.

Red face Fuel leak is dangerous!!

I sure would not be driving that car any further than the nearest qualified garage, until that fuel leak is diagnosed and repaired. You are courting a serious fire if the fuel collects in the proper spot in your engine compartment and you won't have to worry about it if the car goes up in flames.

This kinda reminds me of the story about the guy calling the IRS and complaining about the letter they sent him. When the IRS agent asked him what the letter said the guy said he didn't know, because he hadn't opened it yet. With that thought in mind I suggest you remove the air cleaner and with the car idling, look for the source of the leak.

When the car is running, the fuel lines are under pressure. If it stopps as soon as the car is shutoff, it's probably a tiny leak somewhere. If it drips for a few minutes afterward, it's a bigger leak. Either case, FIX IT. Your part of the ShopForum now, might as well learn how to fix your car. It will save you thousands in the end. A fuel line is an easy way to start...

Jason, I had a leaky EHA valve on our 1991 300CE ... it's a small black plastic block with an electrical connection monuted on the side of the fuel distributor with 2 Torx screws. Since the engine compartment is hot leaking fuel evaporates quickly so it's difficult to confirm that the EHA valve is leaking. Remove the air cleaner and run the engine early in the morning when the outside temperature is as cool as possible. The new EHA valve should come with new green O-rings ... confirm that's the case when ordering it.
