300TE Error Codes
 

Last week my mechanic charged me $95 to diagnose a bad O2 and Mass Air Flow sensor. He wanted $800 to replace them. With help from this group, I did it myself for $265. Now I need to reset any error codes and check for any additional errors.

I have read several of the articles on how to build code readers for the On board diagnostic II (OBD II) system. Based on what I have read, my 93 300TE will have an OBD I (pre 95) system. My buddy has a BMW; he says BMWs are better because he can easily reset the error codes using the ignition and do a "stomp test" to get error codes.

Is there any similar mechanism in my Mercedes, or do I drop another $95 to get the mechanic to do this?

in front of the battery in the firewall is the little box, if you have the red led with little pushbutton, you can pull the codes with the key on by holding the button for 3 seconds, after you read it, you can clear it by holding it for 8 seconds after, you need to do this for each stored code, some models will require a pulse counter to read the codes, hopefully for you you have the led type, i think there is a thread somewhere that describes how to make one if needed.

O2 sensor and air mass sensor for $265 - how did you do that? Should have been around $400 in parts alone.

Got the O2 sensor (bosch) at a local auto parts store (it was in stock) for $120. Found the MAF (bosch) on eBay for $145; I had to pay $10 shipping, so it was really $275. There are two different MAF parts for the older model mercedes; the newer MAF model is more expensive and requires adjustments to the computer system. I bought the original (older) one.

the new maf doesn't require any adjustments, where did you hear that?
