Oil Leak info 1988 300TE
 

My sons 1988 300TE is leaking oil from what looks like the oilpan... rear of the engine area.

Any idea what the procedure or tips for replacing the gasket is?
I cannot find it on my CD's or Braingear!

It is probably just the valve cover gasket leaking - age and heat tend to make the rubber hard and it doesn't seal well.

Replace the gasket and tighten the valve cover to 9 N.m torque (the last time I replaced the gasket, I tightened the valve cover by feel and it just leaked and leaked. I replaced the gasket again and used a torque wrench to tighten to 9 N.m (per manual) and now there are no leaks. This should take care of your leak.

I plan to wash down the engine this saturday and add some dye... It looks like its dripping off the rear of the bellhousing... but it could be from the top.
I assumed it was from the bottom cos the PO said it was, and gave us a oil pan gasket.... which somehow got broken in the trunk, so we need a new one now.

when trying to find oil leak always look for highest wet spot[oil always runs downhill]i also think that you will find that valve cover gasket is leaking at the rear of the engine and dripping off the bellhousing. david poole european performance dallas tx.

Also pay close attention to the parting line where the head joins to the block.
Look along the rear passenger side from underneath the car. Looking for head gasket leak.

Ditto. Head gasket leaks at the rear passenger corner at not as uncommon as they should be.
