B2 piston for a 124

I've looked at 1991 300E for a buddy which I'm almost positive has a B2 piston failure. It doesn't look like it can be replace with the engine installed in vehicle.

Has anyone installed a new B2 piston on a 124 without removing the transmission?

If you do need to remove transmission to you take it out with the engine from above? Or can it be removed from under the vehicle?

It can be removed from underneath- defintly the quicker way to do it instead of puling it with the engine- a lift would help! I've avoided doing transmissions at home because of this reason. I could probabaly do it on jack stands, but don't want to! :D

b2 piston

this is what activates the rear band for second gear starting.it is under cover on right side towards the rear of trans.yes it can be removed while in the car.you will need to remove drive shaft and trans cross member and then fan shroud [and maybe fan and radiator] so that front of engine can be jacked up to create clearance at the rear.using large prybar to push in coverplate while removing the clip.if you are lucky you can insert new piston and get short bar to go into band. if not you will need to remove pan, valve body and plate to gain access. remember " fortune favors the prepared mind"
