Mobil 1 0w40 "European Formula". You can find it at Wal-Mart and elsewhere.

It all depends where you live.Your owners manual should say what should use.We use 5/40 on our cars

I will use 5W40 in summer and 0w40 in winter.

For which models and years?

I believe MB backwards-recommends Mobil 1 0W-40 it for quite a few years.

Note for diesel drivers, M1 0W-40 does not meet CF-4 or CG-4. I use M1 5W-40 in mine. ;)

Now that you're clear on what's recommended you'll find that in the end, a lot of people will put whatever they want in their motors - with all sorts of justifications. Personally, I simplify my life by using only MB parts, and complying with MB recommendations. Hey, it's a Merc.

You seem to have oversimplified the chart - it doesn't say that. I wonder if buying "only MB parts" would be another over-simplification.

The M1 0W40 is diesel-rated and meets the required MBz spec.

The 0W40 is only CF rated, not CF-4 or CG-4. It may meet the minimum MB specs, but I sure wouldn't use it in a diesel. BTW, the Mobil 1 web site also recommends 5W40 for MB diesels. If you put in the info for a 2006 CDI, you get this:

http://www.mobil1.com/usa-english/motoroil/car_care/which_oil/WhichOilManualResults.aspx?option=2

Have you ever run 0W40 in a diesel?

Hatterasguy 09-03-2006 05:53 PM

My friends E300D seems to have run on 0w40 for a large chunk of its first 140k miles.

0w40 is just fine for diesels, its soot suspension where it lacks. Don't drag the changes out to 15k miles and you will be fine. Well half that on the old ones.

Having said that the MB dealer that I use, does use Delvac 1 or whatever they are calling it now in the diesels that come in. Everything else gets 0w40.

I still wouldn't be comfortable using 0Wx in an old diesel, maybe it's OK in a newer one though. We'll find out in a couple of decades. The new packaging for D1 5W40 is:

I'm leary of it as well, 0w40 did not exist when these older engines were built. But in any MB from the mid 90's on its the way to go.

You're probably right, I don't know much about the new engines (post-61x). ;)
