300e sluggish test drive

I have an 87 300e. Yesterday I test drove a 90 300e for my daughter. I was amazed at how sluggish the car was during take off and up a hill. Not only was it slow but scary. The car would get going but the shifts were very rough (almost a jump into the next gear) at higher than normal RPM.
My daughter noted a vibration on the passenger side wall when the car was struggling up the hill.

I read a lot of posts thatcovered everything from temp sensors, tune ups, modulator and tranny replacements. I'm reasonably handy with a wrench but won't venture inside the transmission. The car was nice other than the sluggish take off and gear change issue. NORMALLY I say run away, but my 300E doesn't act anything like this one.

Timely posts with suggested causes might sway me to make an offer.
Thanks for the interest.
Regards,
Bob
