92 500E steering box is loose

Please help!

My 92 500E has play in the stering box and it seems like it is only when the car is slightly turned. It seems to be tight when straight forward. I noticed this due to inside tire wear. I also have leakage from the input shaft but am double checking that now.

I need to know why this is happening and if there is anything other than a new box to fix it. If it is too expensive I will be selling the car as i have a new toy in the garage and this one is not driven much anymore

Not to hijack this thread, but we are in the process of restoring a 82 280Z turbo with 40K original miles. Would you be able to give me any info on where I can find some parts ? Thanks. Good luck on fixing the 500E.

Steering box play

The gearbox freeplay is only checked when the box is centered! The gears are manufactured with a "high spot" to assure minimum slop.

Please explain why i have slop after it is not centered? I do not understand what i am dealing with as far as play after it is off center. Are there any resources you can direct me to?

Click on the box at the bottom right hand of your screen in this forum. When the window drops, look for the link DIY(do it yourself) link by parts catagory. Then read through the "steering" link. WHunter provides alot of info with pictures of steering box slop. I used this info to change out to a rebuilt box. Very helpful. Look for info regarding the adjustment screw on the steering box to take out extra play. Good luck
