Suspension: what else should I have fixed?
Hey everyone,
So my Beast of Burden, a 91 560SEL with 119k, and I have been working at a steady pace to get her in shape. Today she got new front bakes and bearings. Who knew what a difference properly installed front bearings could make. I've come to the conclusion that the PO was, well, a cheap f#$%@g idiot who should be forced to drive severely beaten Kia's the rest of his life. In any case, as I had fully expected, she needs some front suspension work. The mechanic is suggesting lower ball joints, and tie rods to start with. I was just curious to see what the rest of you think, since to me that sounds reasonable although he hasn't quoted me a price yet. But he's usually really good on labor charges, so I'm not too worried. I'm wondering, though, from the years of experience out there if there aren't other things that should be done at the same time, for pricing or convenience. The main symptom is really loose steering and handling, but the play in the tires is more substantial than I had thought, as well as significant play at the steering wheel (about 1.5 inches). She does make that "thud" sound over bumps that is described as usually relating to the Track Rod mounts as well. Ideas? Thoughts? Thank in advance for the guidance, Craig |
at that mileage i wouldnt expect ball joints. but bushings guide track bushings and tie rod ends or complete assemblies. are usually needed.
often the ball joint boots are bad and can be replaced if the joints are not loose at considerable savings. good luck tom w |
