124 rear suspension "Klunk"

I just started getting a "Klunk" from the passenger side rear suspension when driving over uneven pavement. I pulled the shock and thought I had the problem located because uneven pavement no longer produced the noise, but to my surprise it still "Klunked" when going over speed bumps.

I've found a little movement at the wheel carrier/control arm bushing but I'm not sure it could make so much noise. Could this be caused by subframe bushings and if so how do I test them? Could removing the shock reduce the noise from subframe bushings?

I had the same problem on my '93 201. I had to replace one of the rear Sub-Frame mounts, (the front one). When I removed the right rear wheel, I could see that the bushing was worn and there was too much play. After replacing it the noise was gone.

Clunk in rear

I would have a look at the thrust arms on the rear suspension. They are the two on each side that are forward facing, the bushings wear and make noise.

The only way to determine where your problem is would be to raise the car safely and use the 4 P's; Push, Pull, Pry and Prod on everything you can find under the rear suspension until you find the loose part.

Parts to check are the differential mounts, subframe bushings and dog bones. You can tell more about the dog bones by looking at the rubber joints. If there are pieces of rubber sticking out of the rubber joints, replace that dog bone.

Good luck.

Well I Pushed, Pulled, Pryed and Proded last night and only found a bit of play ( just enough to notice movement ) at the carrier bushing. I put it all back together so I can drive it some more in the hope that additional wear would make it easier to find. Of course now it is silent. I'm sure it will be back.

I'm taking the car of the road for the winter in a few months anyway, at that time I'll disassemble the rear suspension, carefully look at all the joints, and replace anything questionable. I'm not confident in my Push, Pull, Pry and Prod diagnostics.

Thanks all.

Jorg
