E220 M111 timing chain

Hello! I am new here - I need help with my W124 2.2 litre which has a rattle related to timing chain wear.

On this engine is it a similar procedure to my old 380SE?

Does anyone have a MB repair manual PDF for this procedure that they might be able to send to me?

Thank you!
Sharon

How many miles (or KM) on the engine? Does it happen all the time? Wondering if low oil pressure or a worn timing chain tensioner might be the actual problem.

Unless the engine has 200,000+ miles, I would doubt that the timing chain is that worn..more likely the chain tensioner just isn't holding.

Removal of the valve cover & inspection of the timing chain stretch would be a starting point. More than 4 deg of stretch would be where I would consider a chain replacement.

I've seen a bunch of M111's rattle on cold-start, (first thing in the morning). The cam advance mechanism turned out to be the problem.

Hi guys, thanks for the help! The car is quiet at idle but when I up the revs it rattles, but only really as the revs climb, once the revs are up its quiet. The car has 180,000km.

I just got done tracking down a engine related rattle in my M111 powered 2000 C230 Kompressor. The rattle was most pronounced in the 1200-1400 RPM range under light throttle conditions, it would disappear at higher RPM ranges but would reappear at 3200-3800 RPM with with reduced volume. The noise was low pitched, low frequency growl - I finally tracked it down to the A/C compressor. The rear mounting bolt for the compressor was finger tight and the compressor was vibrating against the mounting bracket - I tightened it down and all is well. If your symptoms are similar to mine check your A/C compressor mounting bolts.
