Head Gasket Poll M104
I purchased a '95 C280 one year ago with 86,000 miles. Immediately after purchasing the car, it was diagnosed that the head gasket was leaking. The dealer fixed it after about 2-3 months. I now notice (after 9-10 months and 10,000 miles after repair) that the head gasket is torn and is leaking oil again. I haven't called the dealer yet to discuss the matter. Am I on my own and out in the cold for another $1000 repair, or is there any recourse with these people (who haven't been too cooperative in the past)?

Inspect the repair invoice. There should be something there about the warranty limitations. Other things cans cause oil leaks. Let them inspect it and see what they say. Don't show up with an attitude, let them do the talking, ask questions then decide what to do next. If you don't believe them, take to an indy for a second opinion. Try to stay civil. You may be able to work something out even if it is outside of their official warranty limits. If it is the head gasket, it should not have failed so soon.
Good luck, Dan

You may be filling it up with too much oil.
It should not be more than half-way between the low and high marks on the dipstick. Merc issued a TSB to reduce the oil level on the 104 engine from 7.5 down to 7 litres. Cured mine. |
