Odometer

I have recently purchased a 1975 450SL. The odometer does not work but the speedometer does. It has been suggested that a fuse may be at fault. I suspect that I have to replace the speedometer. Does anyone know how these work and how to correct the problem?

I don't think the '75 SL has a fuse in the odometer. As far as I can recall the unit is all mechanical. You will have to pull the unit out and get it rebuilt.

If you go follow this link, it will show you what is most likely the problem with your odometer. http://dieselgiant.com/repairyourodometer.htm
I fixed mine before that link ever existed, so therefor did not take it apart quite as much as you see in the pictorial. If you can find the gear that is slipping (show in some of the last few pics), then you can most likely fix yours without so much disassembly.

While you are in there, put in fresh lightbulbs, and clean up the white plastic parts that are supposed to help reflect light (I painted mine with model paint).

Good luck - let us know if that worked for you.

Where do you live. there is a mobil person here in SAN DIEGO,CA that just fixed mine for 60.00 including parts. I think he charges 15-20 dollars extra to remove it from dash.
He is retired and knows his stuff. takes him 20 minuites after it is out. Also recalibrated the speed right on the money.Upto 100 MPH
I think his price was 48.00 plus parts with it removed.
2 year garantee
Thanks
Rich
