Which ATF to use for 1997 Mercedes E420 with 100k?

OEM is $12/qt. Pricey but if it's the only fluid i can use, I'll buy them. But are other fluids just as good?

Is Mobil1 full synthetic recommended in my 97 E420 w/ 100k miles with original ATF still in there? Or can I use any other Dexron III?

If you have the 722.6 5-speed transmission, you should use OEM fluid.

MBDOC posted something a while back that said you could also put the 722.9 (MB ATF#3353) fluid in the 722.6. The newer fluid was cheaper for some reason.

There were two part #'s as well for the "same" product with A001.989.45.03.10at ~$7.50 a liter being the cheaper of the two.

New fluid can also be used in 722.3, 4 & 5 trans too per the bulletin he posted.

As Matt L stated, you should only use an approved fluid, in this case MB's.

The parts department at my local dealer told me to not bother with their fluid for my 722.4. He said that they used Dexron 3 in the shop for these, and that I should use it too.

Possibly is overkill for the older trans?

I have a 722.6 and know little about the wants and needs of the others, so will not comment.

Yeah, you should use the m/b stuff whenever possible with the .6 trans.
Can't go wrong with factory approved fluids right?

Do not use dextron -3 in your .6 trans.
