How do I remove the baterry from my 350 SDL?
Sure, this is a STUPID question. I am embarrassed to ask it.
I want to replace my OEM battery on my 1991 350SDL. It seems like the old battery is attached to the tray somehow. There are no obvious clamps or other obvious mechanism holding this batter in place, yet it seems fixed to the battery tray somehow. I did not want to force it. Is it being held on to the tray just with gravity? Knowing MB, I would think not, but there are no visible indications of securing this How do I remove this thing? I need to get to work tomorrow and my new battery is sitting here in front of my feet. Worst of all, because of my apparent inability to even change a car battery, I am feeling very foolish in front of my wife right now  Thanks! SA

On my sd, there's a bolt holding a bracket down on the long side of the battery at the base of the battery.

Is it obvious? There is nothing going over the battery and I think the only way may be being secured -- if it is being secured at all -- would be with a tray that holds it down from the base of the battery. Is this something MB ever did with their battys?

Lift up washer fluid tank. There are two brackets at the base of the battery in the front, with I think 10mm nuts on them. Remove and it will pop right out.

If the battery is a smaller one, there may also be a clamp at one side bolted to the tray.
Don't forget to remove the negative cable first. When you do get the battery out, look at the battery tray. If it's got some surface rust, take it out and clean it. There are two bolts on the firewall, one on the left front corner and one that's on a bracket on the front right corner. Once out, look for any debris under the tray because leaves and other junk can collect there. A good shop vac will take care of that stuff. I took a battery tray out of a 380SEL in a junkyard and there was a huge amount of junk under it. If the tray is rusted really badly, lots of holes, consider replacing it. Junkyards are good. Use baking soda and water to clean the tray, and the area under the tray, of battery acid. Then prime the tray with Rustoleum, or a similar paint, then spray paint it black. Use a terminal cleaner to clean the clamps. Use the shop vac to clean out any other junk between the firewalls. Check your heater hoses in the inter-firewall area too.
