My 420sel Keys Turns Everything Works But Does Not Crank

I Just Changed The Starter On My 420sel Its An 88, If I Run A Hot Wire Directly To It, It Starts With No Problem As Long As The Key Is On. But If You Turn The Key It Will Not Crank At All. Any Ideas On What Could Be Wrong ??? Someone Mentioned The Ignition Coil ? Just Not Sure If Its The Ignition Itself ?? Any Help Would Be Appreciated.
Thanksssssssssss

Most likely the ignition switch, could also be the neutral safety switch. Ignition coil has nothing to do with the starter question.

Since you only changed the starter and had to remove the wires to do that, check your wiring. Is there another post or clip that powers the starting circuit? Have someone operate the key while you check the starting circuit with a circuit tester.

Check the wiring on the new starter. Maybe the wiring was reversed by accident. Thats a good start.

I've made this mistake before- some starters have two spots for the small wire from the ignition to attach to- you probabaly have it connected to the wrong one.
