300E, 400k mi, 800$, good buy?

A girl in my art class today, knowing that I was a Mercedes lover (and own one of now 2 at my whole school) told me she was going to be selling her car now that she had gotten a new one. I have seen the car, its a gold 300E with euro lights. She said it has 400,000 Miles (resale's not an issue to me), but has a new transmission (assuming it's a rebuilt, not new) and is in pretty good shape. She said she'd give it to me for 800$ (I'm gonna shoot for 700$)
Is this a good idea. I know a lot of the common issues with the W124's, and also that many of the ones we've encountered are kind of wagon specific. I know the M103 is pretty bulletproof, but at 400,000 miles, how much life (assuming many things were done, I know) should it still have.
Any cautions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Try your best to get some vehicle history, ask the board for a carfax too. :)

I wouldn't buy it because what in the world am I going to do with a 400k 300e? If you have a use for it, then why not? I don't have a use for it.

What year is this 300E?

I somehow managed to completely blank on asking her the year, but I think it's pre 87 (or just before they added the plastic cladding on the sides, it still has the black trim). Mainly interested b/c my mom hates the lincoln, and wants to sell it and stay with Mercedes.
