filter wrench?
I checked with phil here on a rate for this part (oil filter cap wrench for a 1994 c280) and also with my local dealer and prices are a little higher than i thought. I bought one from an auto house but it was plastic and it broke when I twisted the socket wrench. does anyone know where to get a good solid (metal) one a bit more reasonable. threads I've searched here look like 5-10 dollars but no one lists where they get them.
thanks in advance...:) :) :) |
Second tool down on the list will work fine, $9.95

Or I just read that a Fram oil filter wrench "B" from your local big-box parts store will work too. This may be a the plastic breakable type you mentioned though.

i tried the "b" from one of the "box" auto stores and it just seemed to slip on the filter cap as the corners on a rounded nut???

OK, I just read that the B wrench works in a BMW cycle article. The wrench I've always used, which worked great, was for a BMW "K" bike.

thanks for the response... I saw that when I did a google search. I tried the wrench from advanced auto (checker is the sister company) and it was the composite material. it cracked on three places when I tried to turn it. I guess the last guy to tighten it did it too tight. it appears unless i have a shop do it i will have to drop the big money at the dealer for the right tool.

The wrench I bought and presented in that thread works for my car, for a few other MB models that my friends have, and for a VW model I work on. It seems to be a popular size.
Though inexpensive, it's not cheap. It appears to made of hardened steel, and is reinforced at the square drive hole. It should last a long time. |
hazet 2169 is what I have used a looong time, again it is a BMW special tool, although 2169 is the Hazet number. Maybe you can find one cheap somewhere. It doesn't have the threaded bolts on the side, but that makes it slimmer and easier to use, PLUS it has the 3/8" square drive, unlike the MB one which you need to use another socket to turn it with. The ones i found on the net were all in the $25 range though. I think that first one I linked you to is a deal.

There was the official MB type on ebay for $10 a few weeks ago. Keep an eye out they do come up now and then.

thanks for all the help and suggestions. really wanted the mb unit and I will have to watch ebay for it. $30 is too much from the dealer. Hope I dont step on any feet here... but I ended up going to pep boys and found a brand name "Ritefit" with a lifetime warranty. it is model a251 (as mentioned in a link earlier in this thread:book: ). It says it is 76mm x 14 flute. i know it should be 74 mm but when you look inside the wrench it tapers inwards and it looks like it tapers down about 2 mm and it really fit well and worked well. it was only 3.99.:)
thanks again! |
