4Matic driveline question

The car: 2000 E320 4Matic Wagon.

I'm considering purchase of this car. The dealer did have some service records, and the records indicate that the transfer case was replaced under warranty at 20,000 miles. The invoice seemed to indicate that the transmission was replaced along with it, but I couldn't tell with 100% certainty.

My question: on this vehicle, is the transfer case and transmission a single unit? Or could they be replaced independently of each other?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, correct the tx case replaces the tailshaft housing on a 722.6. Not sure how this would be handled through the parts dept though, if you can obtain the part number used you can find out if this was in fact the tx case or the whole transmission incl. the tx case. Or if you can find out what the transmission number was originally you can compare it to the existing trans number, unsure if MB keeps this number current on the vehicle file.

Thanks Jimmy and Gilly. I bought the car today, subject to a successful PPI by my mechanic on Monday. I'll check the invoice for parts numbers, as suggested.

If you were looking at a vehicle history- It sometimes can be had to tell if a unit was removed and reinstalled or completly replaced. I've seen histories on cars I've worked on before say "replace" when all I did was "remove and reinstall." It's all how the bookers book the tickets out and what labor op codes they use as to how it shows up in the report. If you can see a total cost of the repair, that should be indicative as to what was done.
