e320 NOISY DOORS help please

Hello everyone,

I have a 1997 E320 that I just purchased 2 weeks ago. It is in great shape. I have an issue that I cannot seem to find info on in the forums.

My doors creak and moan during opening and closing. I note the oil symbol in the door jam of the driver's door, but could not quiet my door using white lithium grease. Am I using the wrong product? Certain area to grease? I do not think it is the hinges, but the part that keeps the door open and in place. Any info, diagrams on this would be great.

Thanks in advance.

A very common problem, at least on earlier models, is the "door check strap" wearing out, which can produce funny sounds when doors are opened and closed. Do a search on that phrase and you'll see a lot of info.

Yes. Door Check is the correct name. I don't know if you have the same ones as my 98 C230. The ones on my car are metal. A couple of years later they switched to plastic. I tried greasing mine with lithium etc and nothing had any effect. I finally took them out and disassembled them and put some thick grease in them. It helped a little but some groaning came back. Basically it was a bad design. You can get new ones for fairly cheap ($30?) at the dealer but they are not painted if you care. Yours might be different than mine though. I remember a thread on this a couple of years ago.
