What are the symptoms of a blown headgasket? I am curious because my friend has a 190 that is blowing some white smoke and the engine surges. I thought it might be a fuel problem but then thought a headgasket. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Symptoms
Some possible symptoms are low compression in one or more cylinders, water in the oil, oil in the coolant, won't start, steam in the exhaust and low power. A compression check is a good analytical tool.
