can 722.5 OD unit be changed alone?

the overdrive unit on my 1990 300 sl w/a 722.5 transmission is shot, for about two weeks it wasnt working (everything was fine just wouldnt shift to 5th), and yesterday it really failed (made bad metal grinding noises and car wont move).

the unit looks to be mounted to the back of the transmission and i wondered if it was self contained and if it could be replaced w/o going into the main body of the transmission

thanks

I'd be surprised if it didn't take a number of other components in your trans along with it..

here's the problem.it can be accessed by taking the back off the trans and there you find the drum which contains the clutches for 5th.if you remove it or empty out the clutches you will have trouble with reverse.

I think just a basic 12v signal...never studied it much as the transmission wouldn't hold up under the application I would like it to.

Is it that much weaker than a 722.4?

Yes, much. 5th gear doesn't even last under a standard M104's power/torque..so it's out for anything w/ some serious grunt.

Every transmission guy I talked to said No. The 5th gear is grossly undersized and when it goes it typically takes the rest of the transmission with it..An expensive proposition w/ the 722.5's.

My advise, use a .3 and a gear vendors overdrive. It's not cheap, will require a custom adapter plate but you can make it all Bullet proof.
